Questions about a product, compatibility or installation
Updated October 24, 2026
We check deals, not products, so the product's maker is the best place to ask about specs, compatibility and setup. See Do you test or review products?
Compatibility
Many accessories only work with certain models or brands. Before you buy, check with the maker or the store's product page, especially for:
- battery expansion packs and power station add-ons,
- generator parallel kits and transfer switches,
- EV charging adapters (for example NACS, J1772 and CCS), and
- solar charge controllers, inverters and batteries that need to match your system's voltage.
Installation and safety
Anything connected to your home's wiring needs a licensed electrician, and often a permit and your utility's approval. That includes:
- home standby generators and transfer switches,
- Level 2 EV chargers,
- whole-home batteries, and
- solar systems connected to your home or the grid.
Heat pumps and mini-splits may also need a licensed HVAC technician. Follow the maker's instructions to keep the warranty valid.
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. This is called backfeeding. It can kill you or utility workers on the power lines. Use a transfer switch or interlock fitted by an electrician. Run portable generators outdoors only, well away from windows and doors, and keep a carbon monoxide alarm in your home.
